LA MARIPOSA DEL PAPEL

Una mariposa es un papel con vuelo. Pero no un papel cualquiera. Es un papel evocador, espiritual, poético y libre en la naturaleza.

Ese sentido es el que consigue Chisato Tamabayashi cuando corta, pliega y le da forma al papel, la materia prima de su trabajo, en una clase de meditación. Por eso Chisato es la Madame Butterfly del papel.

Como la Madame Butterfly de Puccini, viene de Japón, conoce occidente y sigue fiel a su herencia, tomando la artesanía y el arte tradicional japonés como fuente de inspiración; Puccini, por su parte, nos lleva al país donde transcurre la ópera a través de continuas reminiscencias musicales orientales, aunque su lenguaje es universal. Como así lo es el trabajo de Chisato.

La Madame Butterfly de Puccini transmite una profunda conexión con la naturaleza. Al margen del título en sí, el más evocador de sus óperas, hay constantes alusiones al mar, al cielo, las flores, los pájaros, el verano y la primavera, la noche y el bosque, a través de sugestivos y conmovedores coros y de fluidas melodías de la orquesta; por su parte, Chisato Tamabayahi explica así su concepto estético: “Gran parte de mi trabajo está inspirado en la naturaleza. Nuestra experiencia de la naturaleza no está limitada al lenguaje, la nacionalidad o la cultura, y en mi trabajo quiero transmitirla de este modo esencial”.

Las creaciones de Tamabayashi se caracterizan en muchos casos por una precisión industrial, aunque todo su trabajo lo realice totalmente a mano; así transcurrió también el proceso creativo de la ópera de Puccini, una auténtica obra de ingeniería que engloba música, dramaturgia, escenografía y literatura, y que a su vez se realizó artesanalmente, nota a nota, paso a paso.

La música de Madame Butterfly está llena de aura y belleza, y Butterfly evoca a su protagonista, poética, etérea, delicada y exquisita como las mariposas y como el arte de Chisato, un papel libre que convierte a la primera invitada internacional de Hat Gallery en la Madame Butterfly del Papel.

Por último, el arte de Chisato también se relaciona con el grupo japonés Siberian Newpaper, grupo al que suele escuchar mientras trabaja, porque, según sus propias palabras: “Escuchar su música es como una meditación. Es, paradójicamente, relajante y enérgico. Además, sus composiciones cruzan diferentes géneros, mezclando lo moderno con lo tradicional, hecho que me recuerda a mi trabajo, el cual oscila entre el arte, la artesanía y el diseño”.

THE PAPER BUTTERFLY

A butterfly is a flying piece of paper. But not just any paper. It’s evocative, spiritual, poetic and free, out in nature. That is what Chisato Tamabayahi achieves when, in a kind of meditation, she cuts, folds and gives shape to paper, her raw material. That is the reason why Chisato is the Madame Butterfly of paper.

Like Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, she comes from Japan, she is acquainted with the West and she remains loyal to her heritage, taking traditional Japanese art and craft as a source of inspiration. Puccini takes us to the country where the opera unfolds through continuous references to oriental musical, although his language is universal. So is Chisato’s work.

Puccini’s Madame Butterfly conveys a deep connection with nature. Asides from the title itself (the most evocative of his operas) there are constant allusions to the sea, the sky, flowers, birds, summer and spring, night and forests, through suggestive, touching choirs, and through flowing melodies that are played by the orchestra. Chisato Tamabayahi explains her aesthetic approach as follows: “Much of my work is inspired by nature. Our experience of nature is not limited by language, nationality or culture, and in my work I want to portray it in this primary way”.

Tamabayashi’s creations are often characterized by a machine-made precision, though all her work is entirely handmade. So is the creative process of Puccini’s opera, a real work of engineering that brings together music, drama, scenography and literature, and which, at the same time, was handmade, note by note, and step by step.

Madame Butterfly’s music is full of aura and beauty. The main character in Butterfly is as poetic, ethereal, delicate and exquisite as butterflies are, and also as Chisato’s art is, a free use of paper that turns Hat Gallery’s first international guest into the Madame Butterfly of Paper.

Lastly, Chisato's work is also related to the japanese band Siberian Newspaper; as she says: "I often listen to Siberian Newspaper when I work, because listening to their music is like meditation. It is both paradoxically calming and energy-giving. Equally, their own compositions cross different genres, mixing the modern and traditional, and it reminds me of my work, which occupies a space between art, craft and design".
